How to choose the right water pipe connector for your home?

Pipe connectors or pipe fittings are essential to every building’s plumbing process. It requires several pipe connectors with different designs and effectiveness per requirements while constructing a building. Water pipe connectors are primarily used to join two pipes together to either increase the length of the water supply system, divert the direction in which water flows, or lower the force of water. The water pipe connectors come in different sizes to fit the different pipes they connect. Pipe connectors can be used to connect several pipes of equal or different sizes depending on the requirement. These fittings assist in regulating and measuring water and sewage flow. These connectors are mainly made of PVC, copper, brass, and iron.

Prince, Finolex, and Zoloto are some popular brands of Water Pipe Connectors available in the market. If you are looking for the best places to buy water pipe connectors near you, IBO is the perfect option for you for the most affordable and reliable water pipe connectors.

Choosing the different types of water pipe connectors/fittings and how they work?

Pipes and connectors are a part of the plumbing system in a house. The pipes bring water, while the connectors control the water flow. Below are some types of water pipe connectors to help you identify and understand their use.

  • - Tees – Available in a ‘T’ shape, the tees or tee connectors come with one inlet and two outlets. They are used to connect three pieces of a pipe. The inlet is at a 90° angle to the mainline and orthogonal to the outlets. Tees are available in a variety of sizes and are made of copper, steel, and PVC. Tee fittings are often connected to lines of potable water supply.
  • - Elbows – These connectors are used between two pipes when you want to change the direction of the flowing water. These fittings are available in a variety of angle sizes and are available with female threading that is used to fix the elbows with socket welding. Copper, PVC, and steel are some of the materials that the elbows are made of.
Normal and reducer are two types of elbows available. Normal elbows are used for connecting two pipes with equal diameters, while the reducer is used in cases of different diameters.
  • - Couplings - Coupling is used to connect two pipes with a similar diameter. It is used/installed when there is a hole or leakage in the pipe. To repair the leaked part, cut it off and replace it with a coupling. There are two main types of coupling: compression and slip.
The compression coupling is utilized under normal conditions to connect two pipes to prevent leakage caused by rubber or gasket seals. Slip coupling, on the other hand, can be used between two pipes. Here, a smaller and a larger pipe is used. The smaller pipe is inserted into the larger pipe to work as a single pipe.
  • - Unions – Unions and couplings are pretty similar. However, coupling cannot be removed once installed, although it is possible to remove unions even after installation. Unions have three simple parts: male-ended threads, female-ended threads, and nuts.
  • - Caps and plugs - During repairs and inspection, plugs close the pipe openings. They come with male threads. Like plugs, caps are also used to close pipe openings during repairs. However, unlike plugs, caps come with female threads fixed to the pipe's threaded end.
  • - Adaptors – The main purpose of the adaptors is to act as an extension that is added to pipes. They don't have any special ends and allow for easy connection of different pipes without any complicated setup. They are mainly used for PVC and copper pipes. The plain end of the adaptor is welded or glued at the end of the plain pipes.

How to determine the pipe fitting for your requirement?

The pipe used in your house's plumbing determines the type of pipe connector you would require. Copper fittings are used for copper tubing that runs through your house. In the case of CPVC pipes, you would require PVC pipe connectors/fittings. For PEX tubing, several different PEX fittings may be required. You may also use a material compatible with PEX. Depending on the fluid compatibility running through the application, the right pipe fitting depends.

Here’s how to determine connector size from pipe dimensions:

  • - By inner diameter (ID) – The size of ID is called CTS or Copper Tube Size. It is based on the normal size of a pipe
  • - By outer diameter (OD) – The OD is typically used for smaller diameters measuring 1/2, 3/8, or 1/4

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION’S

1. What materials are water pipe connectors made of?

Aluminum, stainless steel, brass, bronze, cast iron, titanium, zirconium, rubber, and plastic-like EPDM, CPVC, elastomer, nylon, polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), PTFE or PTFE lined, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), etc., are different materials that are used to make water pipe connectors.

2. What are the different types of water pipe connectors?

Elbows, tees, flanges, reducers, unions, couplings, nipples, plugs, bushings, adapters, outlets, valves, crosses, caps, and swage are the different types of water pipe connectors.

3. Can water pipe connectors be used for both hot and cold water?

CPVC Pipes can be used to transport both hot and cold water without affecting the pipe.

4. Can I use different types of connectors together?

Yes, you can use different types of connectors together with the help of adapters.

5. Can I use any water pipe connector with any pipe?

Generally, the water pipe connector and the water pipe are of the same material. For example, PVC pipe fittings are used for PVC pipes and copper fittings are used for copper pipes.

6. Can I use a water pipe connector to connect pipes of different materials?

You can join pipes of different types by using various fittings and adapters.

7. Where can I buy water pipe connectors?

You can buy water pipe joint connectors from IBO stores across multiple cities as well as online.

8. How do I choose the right size of water pipe connector?

To choose the right size of the water pipe fittings, you may determine the outer diameter (OD) and inner diameter (ID). Measure the ID of your pipe using tape and use a nominal diameter conversion chart to find the right size of the water pipe connector.
